The Advanced Materials Act, is a cornerstone of the EU’s strategy to secure leadership in strategic materials essential for the green and digital transitions.
Based on the communication “Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership”, published in 2024, the act outlines a phased, five-pillar approach to accelerate innovation and industrial deployment.
Five strategic pillars
- Boost research & innovation
Strengthen R&D in advanced materials to drive breakthroughs in clean tech, electronics, and manufacturing. - Accelerate lab-to-Market
Launch a “materials commons”—a shared digital infrastructure to fast-track innovation from research to real-world application. - Mobilise Investment
Propose a €500 million public-private partnership under Horizon Europe (2025–2027) to fund cutting-edge materials development. - Support production & skills
Promote EU-based production and procurement, and establish an advanced materials academy to train the next generation of experts. - Strengthen governance & coordination
Create a technology council for advanced materials to align efforts across governments, academia, and industry.
